CHOOSING THE RIGHT ARTWORK FOR YOUR SPACE

CHOOSING THE RIGHT ARTWORK FOR YOUR SPACE

When it comes to decorating your space with art, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. Every room has its own personality, just like every piece of art! Whether you’re drawn to bold abstract paintings, delicate landscapes, or vibrant mixed-media works, finding the right piece for your space comes down to a few key factors: dimensions and colour schemes. Here's a few pointers to help you select the right piece for the right room.

1. Consider the Size of the Space

The first step is making sure your art physically fits the space without overwhelming it—or getting lost on the wall.

For Large Spaces

  • If you have a large empty wall, don't be afraid to go big! Oversized art can act as a stunning focal point, bringing energy and character to the room. A general rule of thumb is to choose artwork that is around 2/3 to 3/4 the width of your furniture. For example, if you’re hanging art above a sofa, aim for a piece that’s 60-75% the width of the sofa.
  • Another option is a gallery wall made up of multiple smaller pieces. Just make sure to leave enough breathing room between each piece to create a cohesive look.

For Smaller Spaces

  • Smaller spaces don’t need large artwork to make an impact. In fact, smaller art can often create an intimate vibe, drawing people in for a closer look. Pairing small pieces together in a gallery or placing them in unexpected places (like a hallway or bathroom) can add a touch of surprise and elegance.

2. Matching the Mood with Colour Schemes

Art sets the tone of a room, and colour plays a huge role in that. So, how do you choose the right colours?

Complementary Colours

  • Look around your space. What are the main colours in your furniture, rugs, and decor? Art with complementary colours (those that are opposite on the colour wheel, like blue and orange) can create contrast and make a bold statement. For instance, if your room is filled with cool tones like blues and greens, a piece with warmer tones like reds and oranges can pop beautifully without clashing.

Harmonising Colours

  • On the other hand, if you want your art to blend seamlessly with the room, choose a piece that incorporates the same colour palette as the existing decor. This creates a calming, cohesive look, where the art feels like an extension of the room itself. If your space is full of neutral tones, a piece with soft shades of grey, beige, or pastels can add depth without overwhelming the serenity of the room.

Adding a Pop of Colour

  • If your room leans towards minimalism or a monochromatic colour scheme, a brightly coloured piece of art can inject life and energy into the space. This works especially well in modern or minimalist homes, where a burst of colour adds excitement and personality.

3. Don’t Forget About the Frame

The frame is like the punctuation at the end of a sentence—it ties everything together. If your space is more traditional, a classic, ornate frame might suit your art best. For contemporary spaces, clean, simple frames or even frameless pieces (like canvases) create a modern, minimalist look.

4. Trust Your Instincts

Above all, remember that art is personal! While it’s helpful to consider dimensions and colour schemes, the most important thing is choosing art that makes you feel something. Whether it brings joy, calm, or inspiration, if you love it, it will find a perfect place in your home.
